Empowering young people with the Word of God

Empowering young people with the Word of God

My name is Welcome Ndlovu and I have an amazing story…

I was born in 1985 in Bulowayo. The way I have seen the Hand of God in my life is amazing. My mom left me when I was 6 months old because of some quarrels with my dad. Until this day, I don’t know my mother. It has been a hectic journey – not knowing your mother who left under such circumstances.

But I thank God that my aunt is the one who looked after me as if I was one of her own. And she already had 7 of her own. She was struggling and sometimes we didn’t know what we would eat. There wasn’t enough food – but we learnt that God will provide! There wasn’t a single day that we slept without eating something.

My aunt also took me to school where I was able to do very well and grow into leadership, later becoming the head boy of my school. I was privileged to grow up in a Christian family. My aunt took me to churches that taught the pure undiluted Word of God and I accepted Jesus as the Saviour of my life when I was young. I have never turned back and have served in the church in various capacities. Currently, I am the Executive Director for SmartChoices South Africa Partners (a non-profit that focuses on health, social and Biblical issues) which is now in partnership with Walk Thru the Bible Southern Africa. I also am a counsellor – especially for young people.

My mission is to help transform lives
I have a passion for young people and reaching them because they are the future. They are the ones with the energy to impart the Word of God to their peers. They are the ones with the capacity to change the world. My mission is to help young people, to empower them specifically with the Word of God, and see their lives transformed. I am honoured to reach out to young people. They are the elders and leaders of tomorrow. I want to leave a legacy – an inheritance that cannot be taken away.

otLIVE helps me to empower young people
I love that I get to teach otLIVE in schools. otLIVE has also changed me in so many ways. It has ignited a passion in me personally for reading God’s Word. And as I understand more about God and His Word, I am empowered to go out and reach young people and, in turn, empower them. It gives me a way to pass on my passion for the Word of God to others.

As I spend more time in the Word, it also puts me in a better position to counsel young people as I listen to their stories, speak into their lives and support them emotionally and spiritually.

OtLIVE has also helped me gain confidence in speaking in front of people. I love teaching the big picture of the Bible in this fun way. And as I teach, I learn a lot from the young people and the joy and passion on their faces really inspire me.

We get great feedback about otLIVE, but probably one of my faviourite stories is from a young man called Themba. He told me:
“When you guys first came to my school with otLIVE, I thought it was going to be a waste of time. But it has really helped me to get into and love the Word of God.”
And I have heard good reports that the fruit of this is showing up in Themba’s life. He is now no longer a bully and is known as a peacemaker amongst his friends.

Teachers and headmasters are also positive about otLIVE. In fact, many schools invite us back again.

Welcome, you are a great inspiration. May God continue to enlarge your territory.

See the newly trained Zimbabwean otLIVE instructors in action…

“Doors are wide open to teach otLIVE in many schools in our area”

At a recent Instructor Forum meeting, the Zimbabwean otLIVE instructors were eager to share their experiences of teaching otLIVE in schools in their area…

“otLIVE touches not only kids, but adults too!”

“This tool equips us for the work of the Lord!”

“otLIVE enables me to reach children with the message of the Bible.”

“Doors are wide open for us to teach otLIVE at many schools in our area.”

“People are excited that they understand the Bible chronologically, even pastors.”

“School teachers are also learning the Bible through otLIVE.”

One instructor has resolved to teach his family otLIVE, saying: “It must start with me and my family first”.

“There is so much potential for otLIVE here in Zimbabwe… at schools, churches, Awana groups, SU and the possibility for using the handsigns in the deaf community.”

The instructors were also excited about their new sense of community and identity as they received their STEP INTO THE STORY T-shirts from Walk Thru the Bible – and as they together committed to helping many to ‘step into the story of God’s Word’.

This was also a time to celebrate the graduation of the instructors who had already taught otLIVE more than 3 times, as well as share ‘best practices’ and upgrade teaching skills.

Please pray with us that as these men and women teach otLIVE in schools, that many Zimbabwean children will come to know, and love, the God of the Bible.

“Our Sunday School is growing”

“Our Sunday School is growing”

Zimbabwean Sunday School teachers share their experience of using KidZ at Heart as they minister to children

Perseverence shares her story

In the past, Sunday School was about some singing, some dancing, teaching the kids a memory verse, and then letting them go and play. But now that we are using KidZ at Heart (KAH), it has changed the way we teach! Children are enjoying Sunday school so much that they are inviting their friends and they are learning about God! And our Sunday School is growing!

For myself, KAH has taught me that when I teach children from the Bible, I am not just teaching a lesson like History. I have learned to hear from God through Scripture – and now I can also teach the children to hear from God through His Word.

Feedback from Everjoy

KAH helped me to understand how important it is to be committed to the work that God has called me to – to teach children about Him. I need to be committed to God, committed to the children and committed to teaching them God’s Word. If I are committed, I will prepare well and care about the well being of the children.

It really also made a big impression on me that sometimes I can unintentionally do things that hinder children from coming to Christ. I never knew this before. Things like not modelling what I teach. The practical pointers that KAH gave us for discipline problems also really helped.

Hear from Marvellous

I am so enjoying the new ways of teaching that I learnt from KAH – for example welcoming the Holy Spirit at the beginning of every lesson. This really helps the children to experience God’s presence during this time, and to calm down and focus. I was also amazed to learn that God can speak directly to kids. I always thought that I had to tell them everything! But, if you create the opportunity, children can hear from God for themselves through His Word. I know know that the children can pray for each other and also for the teacher. I can help the children to be aware of things to pray for.

These Zimbabwean teachers have recently received further training in KAH modules. What a joy to hear and see how they are putting the training to use.

KidZ at Heart aims specifically to equip churches and children’s ministry workers to reach and teach children

within their own culture – without the need for costly curriculum.

Faithful leader Award for Walk Thru the Bible Southern Africa Regional Trainer

Faithful leader Award for Walk Thru the Bible Southern Africa Regional Trainer

We are thrilled to celebrate with Lynnette Stander, the recent Faith Leader Award she received from Walk Thru the Bible International _.

Lynnette serves as a Regional Trainer for Walk Thru the Bible Southern Africa  – training otLIVE instructors who teach otLIVE to children in schools in South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Hear from Lynnette about her passion for this work:

“The Bible became precious to me as a child. My passion is to see it become precious to children today too. And otLIVE is such a great way to do this. It helps children develop a love and understanding of God and His grand story – by teaching them the big picture of the Bible in a fun and interactive way. I am so excited about training instructors who can go out and teach otLIVE in our schools. I want children to know and experience that God still talks to children today through His Word.

My own story began when I was five years old and I gave my life to Jesus at a children’s meeting. I still remember the day. A little old English lady from Lancashire in England came to South Africa. She told Bible stories in such a fascinating way and this little Afrikaans girl clearly understood her Gospel message. When I was 10, I started teaching my friends the Bible. And then, when I was 11, I started my own Sunday School – based on what I saw others do.

I was also given a Bible at Sunday School and I read it passionately. When I look back at that Bible now, it is amazing to me to see the passages I had read and marked as a child – and how God spoke to me even then. A verse that clearly stood out was Jeremiah 1:7: But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. As a young child, God had already called me to work for Him. And I was always drawn to children’s ministry because I had seen in my own life, how God had spoken to me and used me as a child.

When I was young, we would often visit my grandmother over the holidays, and we went to church with her. The pastor there preached mostly out of the Old Testament. And he brought those stories to life and made them so relevant. I think that’s where my love of the Old Testament came from. And so when otLIVE came along, it just seemed like the perfect tool to bring the Bible to life for children – and help them experience the God of the Old Testament and how He still speaks today.

I remember the first time I taught otLIVE, there was a young boy who didn’t actually want to be there. He wanted to be watching the rugby instead. But by the end of the day, he was smiling and talking about how much he had enjoyed it and how excited he was to also learn about the New Testament. I love seeing youngsters enjoy the Bible!

There is such a high level of Bible illiteracy among our children. And they are growing up distracted by so many things like technology. But with otLIVE being such a fun different way of learning, I see so much potential to reach children in schools, churches, aftercare centers, and holiday clubs. There is something that really touches me when I see how excited and enthusiastic children get as the stories of the Old Testament become real for them. They really have an openness and thirst for God’s Word.

But otLIVE is great for adults too. I have had a pastor with 7 years of theological training tell me that it was only after otLIVE that he really understood how the Bible fits together.

It is my dream for people, and especially children, to discover the Bible and see it relates to their daily lives. I pray that it will be their hope, security, and direction in a world where there is so much confusion.”

Growing marriages

Growing marriages

– with Understanding the Love of Your Life

a Live Event from Walk Thru the Bible

The recent marriage enrichment event at ChurchAlive in Northcliff, Johannnesburg was a great time with food, fun and a time for couples to connect. Of special significance was the Understanding the Love of Your Life Live Event which was presented by Pastor Debbie Minnaar.

This prompted many meaningful discussions between couples as they came to a greater understanding of themselves and their partner – seeing, perhaps for the first time, that the other wasn’t being difficult in a certain area, but was actually just different.

As one lady shared: “Understanding the Love of Your Life was transformational for our relationship. We realized that many of our issues were personality differences, rather than an indication that the other didn’t care!”

Understanding the Love of Your Life is based on Sharpening Your People Skills, another Walk Thru the Bible Live Event. Both of these use a highly effective behavioral preference tool to teach participants to better understand themselves and others – and then also practical skills to build stronger, healthier relationships.
