440 excited teenagers, from 21 youth groups across Johannesburg, gathered for a live Silver Ring Thing (SRT) Show at Bryanston Bible Church on a Friday evening in May 2019.
The message on purity, abstinence and God’s plan for sex was brought across dynamically and the young people were engaged by the energy and ‘vibe’ of the video clips, drama, comedy and music.
They were also ministered to by the testimonies of those who shared their personal journeys and the message of second chances and God’s grace and redemption.
Praise God for the hundreds of teenagers who committed to sexual purity and the many salvation decisions. The young people were also given the opportunity to purchase rings – to wear as an external sign of their commitment to purity.
Through PROJECT 434 – SILVER RING THING’S DVD BASED PROGRAM – it is now possible for anyone to facilitate the Silver Ring Thing Program in their church, school, community, youth or small group.

What youth pastors are saying are saying about SRT …
I loved the fact that the youth could stand side by side with so many other young people who had also chosen purity. It’s so good for them to know that they are not alone. We are a community and we can hold one another accountable. That is why I love and support SRT: it’s something the youth can stand for and be proud of!
I was thrilled to see more than 100 teenagers from my youth group make a pledge to stay sexually pure – and put on a ring as an external expression of their inward desire to commit to purity – understanding that we need to be pure and holy – because we serve a Holy God.
~ Charl van Wyk, Youth pastor – Bryanston Bible Church
SRT provides such a great high octane dynamic wow factor that just appeals to the young people. The message of sexual purity is so important and presented in a way that teenagers will relate to. SRT makes abstinence and purity cool – and there is an important experience of ‘we’re in this together’!
~ Andrew Franks, Youth Pastor – Northcliff Union Church
What young people are saying…
SRT portrays God’s plan for sex in a relatable and effective way – and that’s something that’s so desperately needed. SRT talks about how sex is a beautiful gift from God when it happens within the context for which it was intended – marriage. It’s not about God spoiling your fun – it’s about being pure before a holy God and protecting yourself from unnecessary baggage. So important too, is that the show includes God’s story of grace and redemption. Instead of judgement, there is the message of second chances. This is such an important part of the discussion – and life changing for so many teens.
SRT is like a megaphone for the Word on purity! More people need to hear this message and understand God’s heart on sexuality – so that they will be able to glorify Him with their lives – and SRT shares this message brilliantly!
SRT really connects with our generation. The show was so cool – you want to hear more! It creates the platform to talk and think about being pure physically and mentally. SRT encouraged me to make a life changing decision to stay pure and I am so grateful. This message of purity needs to spread to all young people to create a wave against society’s norms!
I feel so honoured to have had the opportunity to attend a Silver Ring Thing show. The message of SRT is so relevant. Society is so accepting of one night stands and hook ups. People think that’s the way it’s supposed to be and that’s all that sex is. But actually it’s so much more. SRT has such an important role in educating young people about the way God intended sex to be. It brings the message across in a way that’s fun, entertaining and really does hit home.
I have found that when I wear my silver ring people sometimes ask about it and it’s a great way to share the gospel!
In a day and age where everything is at our fingertips, and everything we want is given to us instantly – we need to realize how important it is to wait and stay abstinent. I am glad that I decided to wait – and also grateful that this journey of abstinence has helped me to grow in faith and in my relationship with God.
SRT is amazing because it helps you to know that you are not alone in your decision to choose purity. It’s actually cool to wait! Hearing the testimonies and seeing all the people who have chosen abstinence was so inspiring.
My generation has this false belief about sex – that it can be done whenever and with whoever. We see it all the time in the media and movies. But that’s not the case – God intended sex to be so much more than casual pleasure!
SRT gives young people the platform to commit to abstaining sexually, not only is this important spiritually, but it’s vital in avoiding unwanted consequences like sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy outside of marriage.
I feel like in my generation sex before marriage is becoming more and more accepted. There is such a need to understand how damaging it can actually be. Sometimes even Christians grow up knowing that it’s better to wait, but don’t fully understand why. The analogy of how you are giving away part of yourself to every person you sleep with was so helpful. In the end it’s really about staying pure in your relationship with Jesus!
I think that in our modern society, sex before marriage has almost become normal – and teenagers growing up don’t understand the importance of abstinence. So I believe that the message of SRT is so important for our generation. It motivates young people to accept and live in purity before marriage.
The Silver Ring Thing is so necessary for our generation because we live in a time where sexual purity is not celebrated much. Our society deems those who remain sexually pure as the outliers, even though purity is God’s design for us.
SILVER RING THING’S LASTING IMPACT
“I attended a Silver Ring Thing event about ten years ago at my school. I wasn’t quite interested back then, but it left an impression on my life, that even today, I still think about.
I have been through so many things in my life. I fought against God for so long. But on the 6th of June 2017, I gave my heart to Jesus! It was the best choice I’ve ever made!
It took me this long to realise it – and now even more – I keep thinking about Silver Ring Thing! How I would have wanted to be in my current mindset, back then ten years ago.
A constant daily reminder of the commitment I’ve made to the Lord I would like to start wearing the silver ring now. This will mean so much to me! A constant daily reminder of the commitment I’ve made to the Lord and how I want to remain abstinent from this point forward until I’m married one day. I want to commit to that now.
I guess it’s never too late to give your heart, mind and soul to our precious and holy God!”

~ Feedback from Mrs Lyndi Liebenberg, teacher at The Kings School Robin Hills
The Silver Ring Thing has become an annual program which we present to our Grade 9 learners during their mentoring periods in the third term. We find that this age is most receptive to the program as they are mature enough to consider the material with sincerity and conviction.
We chose the Silver Ring Thing program because we felt moved to speak openly with our learners about the impact of their life choices. This really goes beyond school work and learning information; it’s about managing our Christian walk with purpose and dignity. It was very important to us that learners realise that the commitment is not made out of fear (for example fear of contracting an STD), but rather that the commitment is made because we realise that that’s what God asks of His children, that He knows what’s best for us and that we can trust Him implicitly in His purpose behind this command.
The girls and boys also meet separately with mentors of the same gender, where we discuss topics such as why would one make a commitment to purity, do you believe what the Bible says about sexual purity, how to keep the commitment and dealing with past regrets.
What a wonderful testimony and encouragement to the Grade 8 learners who will be doing the Silver Ring Thing program next year. It also offers an inspiring reminder to older learners who have already made the pledge in previous years.
Many of our Grade 9 learners voluntarily chose to make the public declaration of abstinence in front of their school friends, teachers and parents. And were amazingly proud to do so!
We have topped the program off with a special High School assembly set aside for these learners who make the commitment. It makes the promise more defining and honours those who are brave enough to do so. We encourage the learners to arrange an accountability partner to be there at this ceremony. After saying the pledge, these partners come up on stage and put the rings onto the pledgee’s finger. It would be wonderful for the learners on their wedding day, to have their future spouse take the ring off and replace it with their wedding ring!
We believe that the Silver Ring Thing offers young people the chance to do, know and commit to something of eternal value and we’ve been amazed to see how young people have responded to the call to purity. It seems to be that we underestimate the heart of our young people and their great desire to be righteous before their Maker.

Fokus Deo, a High Impact Church in Modimolle, Limpopo, recently held a held a Silver Ring Thing Outreach in partnership with Walk Thru the Bible and Camp10.
Saturday, the 8th of July 2017, saw 300 teenagers from Phagameng, a local community in Modimolle, gather for the outdoor event. The abstinence message was taught in an engaging way using music and testimonies. At the end of the message, the teenagers were given the opportunity to both give their lives to the Lord, and to pledge abstinence until marriage. Those who made the pledge also received a silver ring as a reminder of their commitment.
“Being part of a group of people that believe in Purity was an amazing experience.”
According to Danny Doman, youth worker at Fokus Deo: “Being part of a group of people that believe in purity was an amazing experience! We used social media to build excitement for the outreach and also put up posters and handed out flyers in town. This message of Silver Ring Thing is so relevant! Many of the teenagers who attended come from an environment where drugs, alcohol and pre-marital sex are part of everyday life.”
There were free hot dogs and cool drinks for all who attended. Free cell phone give-aways and games added to the festive atmosphere!

My name is Lizeri. I am 28 years old and I have been wearing my Silver Ring since watching the show in Bloemfontein in 2005.
Since then, God just increased the flame in my heart to wait on Him for His best and not to compromise.
The Silver Ring Thing has meant more to me than just abstinence. I am living a life of purity. I have put my trust in God to prepare me in this time of waiting (like Esther was prepared for a time) and He is shaping me more and more into His image, for His glory.
I have realized that life is not about the worldly order of things: school…then varsity…then work…then marriage…then children… That is just what we have been programmed to follow. It is actually just about one thing…The Kingdom of God and His glory! It is ALL about HIM and for His GLORY! And in this God has given me a passion for young girls and the broken hearted.
God has also revealed something awesome to my heart! The Lord has shown me that the ring is just an indication of where my heart lies. I have given Him 100% of my heart – and that is the safest place I can keep it – in His faithful hands.
The ring as a testimony
And the ring has also been such an awesome tool to start sharing my testimony, as people ask me about it. As I wear the Silver Ring on my ring finger, so many people have tried to convince me not to…”How will Mr Right know that you are not married when he sees a ring on your finger?” But God is more powerful than that!
I just wanted to encourage you to know that there are many who are still walking in the harvest that the Lord sowed through The Silver Ring Thing in South Africa. God is so faithful and His grace is abundant! I can really only give Him all the glory and honour!

PROJECT 434 – SILVER RING THING’S DVD BASED PROGRAM
Through Project 434 it is now possible for anyone to facilitate the Silver Ring Thing Program in their church, school, community, youth or small group.
This youth focused abstinence resource has had a great impact.
Jeffrey van der Spuy from Meyerton Methodist Church shares his experience:
“This course was awesome and life–giving! We ran a Project 434 event in our community. We had expected only about 20 young people to show up, but 86 teenagers attended – including both church going and non-church going youth. Of these, 79 took a pledge of abstinence!
The young people of today are so stuck in a climate of acceptance. Project 434 helps them realize that they can say “NO” and that God’s blessing is on that!
Project 434 also provides a big stepping stone to a new beginning and hope for those who have already gone down the road sexually. It provides a great opportunity for recommitment and reclamation. This is about finding (or refinding) a place of spiritual purity and is actually a deeply spiritual thing. Project 434 helps us come back to a Biblical foundation of sexuality.”
